Just who are we training here, anyway?

We've been working with Connor to try to get him potty trained, not only because we're tired of spending tons of money on pull ups, but also because we just feel he's ready. But admittedly, it hasn't been going very well.

Yesterday, we got out the egg timer and put him in real underwear. That took quite a bit of coaxing to even get him in the underwear until he saw that daddy had underwear just like that (minus the cool racing car on the back, of course). Then he was all for it.

We told him we were going to play the potty game. We told him every time the egg timer went off, we had to run to the potty and sit on it. It worked great all morning. At around 10:30, he even pooped and peed on it! He also peed on me, but it's not really his fault. Note to potty seat manufacturers: make the pee guards on those things just a tad bit higher, would ya?

We were pleased with his progress and thought maybe this time it would actually work, that he'd actually be interested in using the potty. Then it happened. At around 2:30, he was sitting at his little table eating his snack. I went into the kitchen and returned, only to find him sitting in a huge puddle of pee. He wasn't even phased by it. He just sat there, eating his snack and smiling away. So much for the potty game and hoping that being wet in real underwear would make him want to use the potty more. At this point, I think the only people being potty trained are me and my husband.

It took Isaiah about 2 1/2 weeks of using an egg timer every 15 minutes before he started to get it. It stunk, because I felt like my whole life was on hold. We didn't go to restaurants, grocery stores, or anywhere. We just stayed home and learned how to use the potty. Of course, that was in January, when there just wasn't much else to do! =) Now that it's nice out, you could try letting him run around naked in the back yard. One of my cousins, with three kids, did that with her oldest and apparently it helped him gain an awareness of his bodily functions. =) Who knows. Every kid is different! One wise mom of one of my students at Eden said, "Eventually they're all potty trained and they all sleep through the night." And she's right!

I failed potty training! It was the worst of all mothering experiences. But, I proudly report Heather is right: they ALL DO EVENTUALLY get potty trained.
