The creative thinking of 3 year olds....

On our way back from a doctor's appointment over in North Park today, my son noticed one of those speed monitors and noted my speed. For the record, I was doing 27 in a 25 mph zone. Connor was quick to tell me I was going too fast, so I told him "mommy better slow down, or a police man will pull me over." Connor, with his 3-year-old wisdom, said to me "well, mommy, you could always just give the police man a time out!" Um, yeah. I have a feeling Connor doesn't get that you don't give the police man a time out, he gives YOU one. :)

My Sister's Keeper.....

No, I haven't seen the movie. Not sure I'm going to after hearing reviews from some of my friends, who insist it's so loosely based on the actual book that it's not even close to being the same.

But I want to plug the book, by Jodie Picoult. Beth loaned it to me and I must say, it was the most heartwrenching story I've read in a long time. And I totally was not expecting the ending, either. It's the first time in a long time I've read a story that I didn't know how it ended long before I reached the actual ending.

If you haven't read the book, you may want to give it a once over. It will make you laugh and cry all at the same time, and feel deeply saddened by the struggle this entire family faces. I give it two thumbs up.

The Sneeze.......

THE SNEEZE

They walked in tandem, each of the ninety-two students filing into the already crowded auditorium. With their rich maroon gowns flowing .. and the traditional caps, they looked almost .. as grown up as they felt.


Dads swallowed hard behind broad smiles, and Moms freely brushed away tears.This class would NOT pray during the commencements----not by choice, but because of a recent court ruling prohibiting it.


The principal and several students were careful to stay within the guidelines allowed by the ruling. They gave inspirational and challenging speeches, but no one mentioned divine guidance and no one asked for blessings on the graduates or their families.The speeches were nice, but they were routine.....until the final speech received a standing ovation.A solitary student walked proudly to the microphone. He stood still and silent for just a moment, and then, it happened. All 92 students, every single one of them, suddenly SNEEZED!!!!


The student on stage.. simply looked at the audience and said,'GOD BLESS YOU, each and every one of you!' And he walked off stage...The audience exploded into applause. This graduating class had found a unique way to invoke God's blessing on their future with or without the court's approval.

Two icons in the same day......

What a bummer of a day! First, I opened the front page of my favorite online paper to see that Farrah Fawcett had died after her two-year battle with cancer. I loved Farrah. She was cool as a Charlie's Angel. She totally kicked ass and inspired me to not be such a wimpy girl. And she was even cooler in some of her movies, including The Burning Bed. I'll never forget that movie as long as I live.

Then just an hour ago, Isaak informed me that Michael Jackson had died today. As a kid, I think I listened to every album he had. That was, by the way, before the age of CDs and MP3 players, when you had to slide the vinyl on the old record player and set the needle down to hear a tune. While I wasn't thrilled with some of the life choices Mr. Jackson made later in life, no one can deny he was a truly talented musician. The world will be a sad place without him.

Rest in peace to these two icons.

Now THAT'S love!

OK, so I came across a story today that had this picture with it. If you're wondering if you're seeing things, you're not. This is indeed Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, sleeping with the Stanley Cup. Apparently, Crosby's teammates captured this lovely photo of Sid with the cup just days after the team won it. Now, I'm sure it's exciting to win the Stanley Cup, but to sleep with it? I haven't laughed this hard in months. I'm wondering if Sidney is going to cross check a few of his teammates for not only taking the photo, but leaking it to the press.

My little bookworm......

Connor has loved looking at books since he was old enough to sit up. We used to read to him countless hours. When he was old enough, we started going to the library. He loves that.


I've known for awhile that he had an awesome memory. If we read him a book once, he generally had it memorized. He'd get bored with them real fast once he "knew" them.


Lately, though, I've realized he's no longer memorizing but reading. We've gotten books from the library that he's never read, and we haven't yet read to him, and he's starting to sound them out all on his own. It's been a long time since I was taught to read in school, but I'd have to say that he's probably reading at a second grade level already. Add this to his basic math skills of adding and subtracting simple problems, and my poor kid is going to be bored out of his mind when he finally starts school!

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there. Today, we went to Beechwood Farms in Fox Chapel to take a little hike. We got to see some really cool bullfrogs, like the one on the left. They were hanging out, hoping for a fly to wander by for lunch. We came across a really cool treehouse, too. We didn't realize how high up we were until we looked out over it. What a breathtaking view. Connor was a little scared when he realized how high up we were, but a hug from daddy helped.
